Record number of births in 2011

Birth figures for 2011 were released this week, and they showed that more babies were born in England last year than in any year since 1971. Indeed, the number of babies born was over 22 per cent higher in 2011 than it was when the current baby boom started ten years earlier.

This rise was very pronounced amongst women aged 40 or over. The number of births to women in this age group has almost trebled in the last two decades, from 9,835 in 1991 to 29,350 in 2011.

So it is clear: the baby boom continues, and one of the results of that is ever-more stress on our midwives and maternity services.
